Socioeconomic Study

Surfrider is partnering with Oregon State University on a project to assess socioeconomic issues associated with establishing Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in Oregon. The project will identify effective strategies to address and minimize impacts on Oregon's coastal communities from protecting ecologically important ocean habitats. The investigation will include interviews with fishermen and elected officials to identify their values, concerns, and recommendations. The final product will be a roadmap for the state to effectively address social and economic factors in MPA planning, including guidelines for: a) socioeconomic assessments, b) public and stakeholder input, c) integrating ecological and socioeconomic criteria, d) potential mitigation and/or compensation.
