4H Surfrider Stewardship Surf Camp Gold Beach, Oregon

Uncategorized No Comments

The Gold Beach 4H Surfrider Stewardship Surf Camp was a great weekend of learning and surf. The weather may not have been all time, but the kids were. All 14 surf campers got waves and learned about tides, swell direction, surf conditions and various conservation issues. The kids also helped to clean up the Rogue River mouth by grabbing trash both days after their surf.

There were many smiling faces and the kids were a pleasure to teach. Special thanks goes out to all of the volunteer surf coaches including Luke Mathison who brought up his rental fleet of stand up paddle boards for the kids to play around on in a little calm area of the river.  Another shout out to Ryan Cruse and A Warm Current for their donation of wetsuits and his excellent surf coaching.

The kids left the camp on Sunday with a greater appreciation of our natural resources, a camp t-shirt, a packet of Surfrider Foundation information, stickers and will receive a dvd of their surfing exploits in the mail soon.

There are two more camps coming up in August. One in Crescent City, CA for Brookings kids on August 6th and 7th. Another at Hubbards Creek in Port Orford on August 13th and 14th. Contact Michelle Carillo at the Gold Beach 4H office at 541 247-6672 to sign up. Contact Dave Lacey at 541 373-0487 or at davejlacey@yahoo.com for more information.

Thanks to all who came out this evening for a packed house event at the Savoy Theater. The Redfish Rocks marine reserve community team helped host an awesome forum with short films and video from the Port Orford nearshore as well as demonstrations by agency staff and local fisherman on research and monitoring. Special thanks to Dave Lacey and Briana Goodwin for all of their work and support on helping to put this together. Click below for a short clip from the event!
