King Tides bring snapshot of sea-level rise

Written by oregon | Nov 9, 2012 10:19:06 PM

“King tides” are extreme high tide events that occur when the sun and moon’s gravitational forces reinforce one another.  King tides tend to be more dramatic in the winter when storms cause increased wind and wave activity along the coast. These high water events allow us to visualize now how flooding from rising sea levels will impact our beaches, coastal areas and shoreline communities in the future. Surfrider members in Oregon and along the west coast are participating in an effort to help document these tidal events and encourage others to do the same. The Oregon King Tide website has plenty of information on best dates and times for tides in your area, how to upload photos and suggestions for photographic documentation. The more photos and documentation the better and hey, it's a good reason to go to the beach! King tides will occur:

November 13-15th, 2012

December 12-14th, 2012

January 10-12th, 2013
