Oregon Beaches Forever: Winter Events

Written by Kaia Hazard | Oct 24, 2025 6:19:18 PM

We’re rounding out another year of Oregon Beaches Forever with a slough of fun events!  Join us virtually for our webinar series, or in person at events in Newport and Cannon Beach.

Webinar: Valuing our Beaches: The Economics of Coastal Ecosystem Services in Oregon feat. Steve Dundas

In Oregon and around the globe, climate change is driving rising sea levels and increasing erosion in populated coastal areas. A key hurdle to improving policies that impact our beaches and coastlines is the integration of ecosystem services and their economic values into spatial planning. This is especially important in dynamic environments that are subject to changing conditions from natural hazards and the impacts of climate change. In this talk, Dr. Dundas will discuss his research on estimating economic values for services provided by Oregon beaches, like coastal protection, recreation and safe beach access, dune restoration, and carbon storage, through statewide surveys and revealed behavior in housing markets.  He will also discuss how this economic research is being used to inform both public and private adaptation strategies in response to projected future ocean conditions.

The Fate of Beverly Beach & Highway 101

The Oregon Dept of Transportation is currently seeking an exception to statewide land use law Goal 18, which would allow them to armor roughly 2 miles of Beverly Beach. Join us to learn about how armoring will negatively impact the beach, contribute to discussion about potential impacts to your community, and what alternatives might look like that preserve the beach, maintain beach access, and protect the highway.

Webinar: Oregon King Tides & Sea Level Rise feat. Rhiannon Bezore

Oregon has participated in King Tides Project, an international citizen science effort, since 2010. The Oregon Coastal Management Program (OCMP), the CoastWatch Program of the Oregon Shores Conservation Coalition, and local partners, including the Oregon Coast Visitors Association, Oregon Sea Grant and others support this project. The webinar will go over the history of the project in Oregon, how it informs about sea level rise, how to participate, and how to navigate the website at www.oregonkingtides.net. Documenting the highest annual reach of the tides with photos tells us about areas of the natural and built environments which are subject to erosion and flooding as well as what to expect as sea level rises.

King Tide Watch Party

Join us for a "tide crawl"!  We'll meet at Les Shirley Park to watch the waves from the dunes and see the many dynamic forces at play at the site of the Ecola Creek NBS project.  Our next stop will be the Gower Street beach access, where we will have a view of Haystack Rock.  We will be joined by community partners from Oregon King Tides Project, Oregon Shores Conservation Coalition, CREST, and Haystack Rock Awareness Program to lend their perspectives on how their work intersects with King Tides, how King Tides impact our coastline, and what we can learn from these seasonal events.

πŸ“† Saturday, December 6, 11:30am - 1:30pm
