The 13th annual Clean Water Classic surf contest presented by Subaru wrapped up this past weekend in Westport, Washington under spectacular conditions. With a 6+ foot swell at a favorably long period with a light offshore breeze, double overhead sets weren’t uncommon on Saturday as competitors made the most of the conditions. The event, organized and put on by volunteers from the Pacific Northwest chapters of Surfrider Foundation, is a major fundraising event for local chapters of Surfrider Foundation from southern Oregon all the way to British Columbia, attracting hundreds of spectators and over 100 contestants in the only Pro/Am contest held in the region. “Our chapters and members work hard to put this event on every year and it represents one of the biggest fundraising opportunities and membership drives they participate in”, says Charlie Plybon, Oregon Policy Manager for Surfrider Foundation. “These funds help support a variety of campaigns and programs that focus on water quality, beach access, ocean health, and shoreline preservation, and the contest presents us with an awesome opportunity to reach surfers with our initiatives. All of the proceeds are split evenly among participating chapters to provide crucial funding to Surfrider initiatives at the local chapter level.”
On Saturday October 5th, the first heats started at 7:45 AM at Westhaven State Park in Westport. The event concluded at 3 PM on Sunday, October 6th. Over the course of the contest, more then 50 heats were run with most being 15 minute heats. Six competitors per heat was the norm on Saturday, with the semi finals and finals on Sunday drawing between two and four competitors per heat. The weather was outstanding all weekend long and the surf was fairly consistent, with good size and some challenging conditions. The contestants and spectators held true to their Pacific Northwest style, maintaining great surfing and fun in what still felt like a summer weekend.
The event would not have been such a huge success without the amazing support of all our sponsors and volunteers which are too numerous to list.
