Protecting Special Places

The process to establish a system of Marine Reserves and Marine Protected Areas within Oregon's Territorial Sea has moved forward into the State Legislature following OPAC's recommendation to the Governor to move forward with 2 areas as "Pilot Projects" (Redfish Rocks in Port Orford and Otter Rock near Depoe Bay). 4 other areas (Cape Falcon, Cascade Head, Cape Perpetua, and Coos County Area) were also recommended for further evaluation over the next 2 years through ongoing community collaboration, scientific research, and socioeconomic analysis. To see the recommendation from OPAC, click here. Read Governor Kulongoski's response to the OPAC recommendation by clicking here. An important volunteer opportunity for Chapters and Activists in the coming months is to write individual or chapter letters to State Senators and Representatives from your area and letting them know that you support this effort and that the long term health of the ocean is important to all Oregonians.
