Volunteers Brave the Rain to Beautify Rose City

On Tuesday, 35 volunteers braved wind and rain to remove more than 100 pounds of trash from Portland's Sellwood Riverfront Park and Ross Island. Volunteers used kayaks and stand up paddle boards provided by Next Adventure to remove trash from Ross Island. A break in the weather provided a nice paddle out to the island, but the volunteers faced a challenging return with trash tied to their vessels, paddling against the wind in driving rain.

When volunteers returned, they were greeted with pizza, fruit, and brews. Special thanks to Brew Dr. for bringing free kombucha for volunteers and volunteering to pick up trash!

Prizes were given to volunteers for:

  • Most cigarette butts collected by one volunteer - 100 butts!
  • Crowd favorites - Christmas wreath and chair (both found on the island)
  • Heaviest bag of trash - 11 lbs

Thank you to our wonderful, dedicated volunteers who didn't let rain stop them from keeping it clean upstream!
